Conditions of the competition

The competition is held separately in the disciplines by type of voices: sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, baritones and basses.

Russian and foreign performers are allowed to participate in the Competition:
- sopranos, mezzo-sopranos and tenors aged from 18 to 32 years
- baritones and basses aged from 18 to 34 years
for the opening day of the Competition on September 14, 2020.

The security deposit amounts to 3500 rubles or 50 euros. The deposit will be refunded to the participants after registration at the competition is passed. If a participant fails to attend a personal audition, the deposit shall not be refunded.

Application submission

Application documents are accepted from December 17, 2019: properly filled application form (Word format only) with a complete package of documents should be sent to the email address: competition2020@obraztsovafund.com

Deadline for application:
For participants of the auditions in Krasnoyarsk - April 15, 2020, 6:00 p.m. Moscow time
For participants of the auditions in Vienna - April 30, 2020, 6:00 p.m. Moscow time
For participants of the auditions in Moscow – June 15, 2020, 6:00 p.m. Moscow time

Application forms should be completed in Russian or English.

Incomplete or incorrectly filled applications shall not be accepted for consideration.

Package of documents

To be sent in one letter to the email address: competition2020@obraztsovafund.com with the name and surname of the participant in the subject line, for example: application form of Sergeeva Svetlana Nikolaevna

The Competition Directorate may provide the participant with a qualified accompanist on the basis of the application submitted by the participant together with the package of documents.

Participants, who pass in 2nd Round, should send scanned sheet music of the works they perform and requisition for accompanist, if required, not later than August 15, 2020.

The applicant is responsible for the accuracy of the information provided to the Competition Directorate.
Contestants should keep copies of all materials sent with the application.
Within 5 days from the date when full package of documents was received, the Competition Directorate sends by email an official confirmation of participation to each registered applicant.
Each participant confirms his/her arrival to the contest by email in 5 days before the audition.

The Competition Directorate reserves the right to use all the information materials and photos sent by contestants for provision to mass media.

Rehearsals

The Competition Directorate provides every contestant with time to rehearse:
30 minutes before 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rounds.

Rehearsals are scheduled on the day preceding the contestant's performance.

Hotel accommodation and travel

The Competition Directorate provides visa support in Russia for foreign participants of the Сompetition.

Participants of the 1st Round bear all expenses related to travel and accommodation.
A preliminary request for the hotel booking can be submitted by the participants of the 1st Round to the Competition Directorate.

All expenses related to travel and accommodation of the participants of the 2nd and 3rd Rounds are paid by the Directorate.

If a participant performs with his/her accompanist all expenses on accompanist`s invitation and accommodation are borne by the participant of the Competition.

Concert clothes

To perform in all three rounds of the Competition, an evening dress is required (a tailcoat or a dark suit for men, a long concert dress for women).

Order of holding the competition

The Competition consists of 3 rounds.
Only participants whose documents have been submitted to the Competition Directorate within the time limit and on the form specified in this regulation and who have received an official invitation from the Competition Directorate, are allowed to participate in the 1st Round.
No more than 15 contestants in each direction – sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, baritones, basses, that is, no more than 75 people, are allowed to participate in the 2nd Round by the decision of the jury.
No more than 3 contestants in each direction are allowed to participate in the 3rd Round by the decision of the jury.

The auditions are open for public.
All works should be performed in the original language, in the original key, by heart (only German Lied and romances are allowed to be performed in modified key, except for cases when the work is written for the type of voice corresponding to the type of the performer`s voice).

The participants who have advanced to the 2nd Round, have an opportunity to make changes to the program of the 2nd and 3rd rounds till August 15, 2020.
Changes in the program declared by the participant are not allowed after August 15, 2020.
The order of performance of works at all the rounds shall be decided by the participant.
Works performed in one round cannot be repeated in another round.


1st Round (qualifying)

April 27 – 28 - auditions for the participants of the qualifying round in Krasnoyarsk
May 14 – 15 – auditions for the participants of the qualifying round in Vienna
June 26 – 29 – auditions for the participants of the qualifying round in Moscow

Participants have the right to choose the city where they pass the 1st (qualifying) Round.
The results of the 1st (qualifying) Round will be announced on July 1, 2020 further to the auditions in Krasnoyarsk, Vienna and Moscow basing on the overall rating made up of the points scored by the participants.


2nd and 3rd Rounds

Registration
On September 14, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each participant should pass the registration at the Competition Directorate located at: Moscow, Bolshaya Nikitskaya str., 19/16 building 1, Helikon-Opera Theatre

Draw procedure
On September 14, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. a draw procedure will take place at the Helikon-Opera Theatre located at: Moscow, Bolshaya Nikitskaya str., 19/16 building 1

Purpose of the draw procedure is to establish the order in which contestants will perform on the rounds. The order of performance determined by the draw procedure is kept till the end of the Competition.
The draw procedure will be held in the presence of the Competition Directorate.
All contestants must attend the draw procedure.
If contestants cannot participate in the draw procedure due to circumstances beyond their control, they must justify their absence during the draw.
At the written request of the contestant, the person designated as the applicant or the official representative of the Competition Directorate will participate in the draw procedure on behalf of the contestant.
The order of performance determined by the draw procedure may not be changed, except in exceptional cases, which the contestant must justify.
The organizers of the Competition consider reasons and make decision, which must be final.
Any change will only apply to the current round.

Program of the competition

1st Round

Two arias from an opera, cantata or oratorio of the contestant's choice, written by various composers, presenting different vocal styles and performed in various languages (no more than 10 minutes)


2nd Round

Each contestant presents a completed concert program which should include:
Two arias from an opera, cantata or oratorio
Two vocal works of the chamber repertoire by the German, Italian, Russian, French, Spanish composers or a folk song

Duration of the program - no more than 20 minutes
The order of performance of works can be random


3rd Round

Works are performed with orchestra

Two opera arias by the various composers of 18th-20th centuries.



Works performed by the participant in one round cannot be repeated by him/her in another round.

All the works should be performed by the participants:
- in the original language, by heart
- in the original key for the voice specified in the application

Participation in the Сompetition means acceptance of all the conditions specified in all sections of these Regulations.

All rights to film, audio and video recordings during the Competition belong to The Charitable Foundation of Support for the Music Art «The Elena Obraztsova Foundation».

The jury of the competition

Results of the Competition are determined by the decision of the international Jury, which includes outstanding musicians and eminent figures of opera theatre.

Special Prizes established by the opera theatres, state and public institutions will be announced later.


State and public institutions, artistic unions, business companies and press are given the right to establish their Special Prizes as agreed with the Competition Directorate.
All the Prize Winners are obliged to take part without compensation in the concerts arranged by The Charitable Foundation of Support for the Music Art «The Elena Obraztsova Foundation» - two times in period up to the December 31, 2021.

The competition management

The Competition is managed by the Competition Directorate.
The competition Directorate is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Competition rules.

It may take any measures necessary to ensure their application and implementation.
